Backus, 77, of 173 Horseshoe Drive, died Tuesday at the Buckley Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Holyoke. He owned the former Econo-Wash Laundromat in Fairview, and worked in the Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee retired in maintenance service, department 1985. He was born in Akron, Ohio, and lived in Plattsburgh, N.Y., before moving here in 1962. He served in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean' War, and retired as a technical sergeant after 21 years' service. He received a Victory Medal, American and Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbons, a National Defense Service Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Award.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3104 in South Hadley and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He leaves his wife, the former Avis I. (Colburn) Backus; a brother, Herbert of Munsville, N.Y.; and nephews and nieces. The funeral will be Friday afternoon at Phaneuf-Blais Fairview Funeral Chapels, with a military burial in Fairview Cemetery. Maurice L. Parent SPRINGFIELD Maurice L. "Moe" Parent, 79, of Greenlawn Street, died Tuesday at Baystate Medical Center. He was a 25-year clerk at the main downtown Post. Office, and retired in 1977.

He was born in Ludlow, was a lifelong resident here, and was graduated from the former High School of Commerce. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a master sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division. He worshipped at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, belonged to the Ludlow Country Club, and was a past member of. Elks Lodge 61. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Josephine C.

(Mercolino) Parent; two daughters, Maureen Gelbwachs of Springfield Carol "Cookie" Donovan of Westfield; a sister, Blanche Cade Springfield; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
