How long do lawn sprinklers last? ›

Generally speaking, the life expectancy of a sprinkler system is about 20 years, on average. As for its components taken separately, good quality heads will last you anywhere between 10 to 15 years, while inexpensive ones will only be good for 2 or 3 years.

A fire sprinkler system is a type of automatic extinguishing system (AES) that prevents fire growth and spread by releasing water through a series of sprinkler heads connected to a distribution piping system. Water is released through the sprinkler heads once the surrounding air reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Your lawn needs 1 to 1 ½ inches of water per week. A typical in-ground sprinkler system provides ½” of watering, per zone, in a half an hour. This would mean that you need to run each zone of your sprinkler system for 30 minutes, 3 times a week to sufficiently hydrate your lawn.

That way, you can eliminate the possibility of clogged sprinkler heads or trapped debris causing problems. Sprinkler systems should be cleaned at least twice a year. It's especially important to get rid of clogs before storing your system for the winter, so schedule your two cleanings for late fall and late spring.

Watering with a typical sprinkler using a standard 5/8" garden hose for one hour uses about 1,020 gallons of water; if you water three times per week, that's about 12,240 gallons per month.

Wet pipe, dry pipe, pre-action, and deluge are four types of fire sprinkler systems. Each of these systems helps prevent flames from spreading and reduces fire damage.

While different parts of your system may need replacing throughout its life, you can expect the average sprinkler system to last for upwards of 20 years. During that time, you'll likely need to replace your sprinkler heads around the 10-year mark if using high-quality heads.

Remember, sprinklers with “loading detrimental to sprinkler performance” must be replaced if an inspection spots them. Heads that are “heavily loaded” have dust, dirt, debris, or grease that is difficult to remove without touching the sprinkler head.

Sprinkler heads need to be replaced if they are found to be damaged, leaking, or defective in any way during routine testing. Old sprinkler heads also require replacement.

Extra high sprinkler heads should have tests done every five years, while dry pendent sprinkler heads should have tests done every 10 years. Quick response sprinkler heads need an initial test done 20 years after installation followed by tests every 10 years after that.
