2 Almanac Journal and Courier Lafayette lndriJuly 3 1981 digest Weatherford trial may be delayed I Michael Weatherford remains a fugitive from I justice and he probably be tried in absentia on I a theft charge next week in Tippecanoe Superior I Court 1 I The trial date was set before Weatherford 38 fled I from federal and local police agents attempting to ar I rest him May 6 on a federal indictment accusing him I of drug dealing in late 1980 I A motion to try Weatherford in absentia was filed I earlier this week by John Meyers Tippecanoe Coun ty prosecutor However Meyers said the special judge on the case Thomas Milligan of Montgomery Circuit Court has indicated he will deny the request The juge saicbhe would rule on the request in a Monday afternoon hearing Weatherford when he fled was free on a SlOO bond set on the Superior Court 1 charge and bonds totaling $100000 on an appeal to a 1978 con viction for drug dealing and criminal charges pen ding against hinf in Warren Circuit Court He was to have been tried' on a charge accusing him of having two way radios allegedly stolen from the Worrall Propane Co in June 1980 Local police units carrying out a search warrant discovered the property a month later in home 423 Wabash Ave The delay in the Weatherford case leave I courthouse without any trial action Prospective jurors have been summoned for the Superior Court 1 trial of Jack Vincent Pearcy 606 Jackson St rankfort on a robbery charge on Tuesday Superior Court 1 Judge Raymond Gollmitzer is scheduled to preside over the trial Pearcy is accused in the eb 5 1981 robbery gun point robbery $210 from the Wareco Service Station 3112 erry St Prosecutor takes fireworks case No arrests have been made after Lafayette confiscated about 400 pounds of fireworks from two men Wednesday including illegal Roman candles and firecrackers police say Tippecanoe County office officials said today they are reviewing the case No arrest warrants have been issued Lafayette Police Det Paul White said today that no arrests were made The case was turned over to the prosecutor because Pat Cox the investigating I officer to take that he said White said that seizure of such a large quantity of fireworks is unusual here The addresses of the two men were taken and should charges be filed a warrant would be issued for their arrest he said While on routine patrol at 840 pm Wednesday Cox noticed a green van parked at 319 5th St He said two men nearby were acting suspiciously A search of the van revealed 16 cases of illegal I fireworks The men were not arrested The fireworks I were seized I The Indiana State ire Marshal's office has said I any firework that explodes travels through the air I or across the ground in an uncontrolled manner is I illegal I University School of Law I Indianapolis in 1979 I House gets 2nd dose of fire Lafayette firemen were called a second time Thurs day to a Levering St home destroyed by a blaze that morning The fire department responded to a call at 8:41 pm to 2824 Levering St to a home owned by Thur man Seaman A fire had gutted the one story home and its con tents at approximately 4 am Thursday brother Leonard who lived in the house escaped with minor arm burns Irma Seaman wife said this morning that the remaining structure of the house had been tom down during the day and her husband was burn ing rubble at the site Thursday night The cause of morning blaze still is unknown WL to receive development aid The City of West Lafayette will receive $297000 in community development funds for fiscal year 1981 82 The block grant from HUD is to be used for pro jects including code enforcement housing rehabilita tion public service park and recreation facilities fire protection and water and sewer facilities The entitlement grant determined by formula was originally $288000 for fiscal year 1980 81 but an additional appropriation raised the total last year to $310000 Montessori classes are offered Rising Star Montessori School is offering a com bination of academics and fun during its summer sessions for children aged 3 to 8 or those lads and lasses aged 5 to 8 the session will start Monday and run through July 31 Classes will meet 9 to 11:30 am Monday through Thursday Director of the school Rosemary Pinciotti will be offering the class entitled Sea the Land the or 3 and 4 year olds two two week sessions will be offered both taught by Jean McGroarty The first class which will run Monday to July 17 is entitled from the Seed Students will spend the time exploring a variety of plants The second apparently suffered a heart attack in his residence at 1310 Grant St WL Bom at Metropolis Ill he was reared at Elmhurst HL He came to the Lafayette community in 1952 He graduated from University of Illinois in 1934 with a degree in chemical engineering He was an engineer with Pure Oil Co at CrystaL Hl for 18 years Mr Backoff was former vice president and on the board of directors of owler State Bank He was a member of Chicago Board of Trade and Central Presbyterian where he was a former trustee and elder He also was a member of 941 at Elmhurst Scottish Rite Shrine Medinah Temple of Chicago and Elks Lodge 143 In 1934 he was married at Elmhurst to Vivian Pape who survives Also surviving are two sons James Backoff of West Lafayette and Robert Backoff of Colum bus Ohio Roger Hensler REMINGTON Roger Hensler 16 died at 6 pm Thursday in Methodist Hospital Indianapolis from injuries suffered in a motorcycle auto accident Wednesday afternoon Bom at he was a life resident of Rem ington He would have been a senior at Tri County High School and was a member of the National Honor Society A and 4 Club at Tri County He attended the Christian Church of Remington Surviving are his mother Mrs Joyce Hess of Geneva Ill his father Donald Hensler of Rt 2 Remington and four brothers and a sister Jerry Randy Phil Chad and Dana Hesler all at home Mrs Bessie Greenberg Primack 85 of 640 Oregon St died at 6:40 pm Thursday in Americans Healthcare Center where she had been a patient one day She had been in ill health two years Born in Russia she came to Lafayette from Peoria Ill in 1930 In 1925 she was married in Canada to AaronPrimack He was Rabbi at Sons of Abraham Synagogue before his death in 1943 Mrs Primack was employed at Style Shop for 20 years She was a member of Sons of Abraham Synagogue Hadassah and Ladies Aid Society Surviving are two sons Allen Primack at home and Nathan Primack of Waukegan HL Edward Slipher RANKORT Retired farmer Edward Slipher 92 of Rt 1 rankfort died at 10 am Thursday in Milner Community Healthcare Center Rossville He had been ill three weeks He was a native of Mulberry In 1914 he was mar ried to Iona Egan who died in 1932 His second mar riage was in 1942 to Vera Page She died in 1976 Surviving are five sons inton Slipher of Rt 1 rankfort Stanley and Robert Slipher both of rankfort Wilbur Slipher of New Jersey and red Slipher of Plainfield three daughters Sylvia Larimore of Rt 2 rankfort Charlotie Walker of rankfort and Wanda Pasco of Canada and a brother Claude Slipher of rankfort Mrs Vemice Biggs ATTICA i Mrs Vernice I Biggs 70 died at 12:20 pm Thursday in Community Hospital Williamsport She had been in ill health two years Born and educated at Veedersburg she lived there before moving to Attica 25 years ago She was first married to Gilbert Bever who died in 1960 Her se cond marriage was in 1969 at Williamsport to Robert Biggs He died in 1971 Mrs Biggs was a clerk at the former Grab It Here store here for 28 years She was a charter member of Eagles Ladies Aux iliary and also was a member of the Union of Retail Clerks Association Surviving are a daughter Mrs Richard (Deloris) Moore of Crawfordsville two sons Milo Bever of Covington and Lewis Bever of West Point his mother Mrs Roy (Carrie) Haas of Veedersburg three sisters Mrs Marie Rennick and Mrs red (Laura) Dodrill both of Attica and Mrs Maxine ix of Veedersburg and a brother Benny Haas of Hillsboro BROOK Kenneth Herriman 68 a former Brook resident died unexpectedly Wednesday even ing in his rural Plainfield home apparently of a heart attack Born in Newton County he was a graduate of Brook High SchooL He moved to Indianapolis in 1939 and was employed by Standard Materials Divi sion of Martin Marietta Co retiring in 1970 as superintendent He moved to the Plainfield area 25 years ago Surviving are the widow the former Catherine Schulter one son Kenneth Herriman Jr a daughter Martha Allen both of Cincinnati Ohio and two brothers George Herriman of Pharr Texas and Bernard Herriman of Peoria Ill April Wendling April Wendling 23 month old daughter of William and Brenda Seyfried Wendling of 1108 Potomac Ave died at 2 pm Thursday in Riley Hospital Indianapolis She had been in ill health the past two weeks and hospitalized since June 29 She was born at Lafayette Surviving with the parents are two sisters Belin da and Shelly Wendling and a brother William Wendling Jr all at home Mrs Minnie A Overman BURNETTSVILLE Mrs Minnie A Overman 96 of Burnettsville died at 5 pm Thursday in Mon ticello Healthcare Center where she had been a residnet since ebruary Born at orest in Clinton County she resided in that area most of her life and was a practical nurse there for several years She came to Burnettsville 30 years ago and resided with her daughter Mrs Orpha Tam In 1903 she was married to Vernon Overman He preceded her in death in 1937 Mrs Overman was a member of orest United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star
