How many attackers and defenders do you keep juiced up? (2024)

I was just thinking about how to best manage my portfolio.

Personally, right now I only have 4 mons that I think are worth powering up to the max. These are high IV defenders with good movesets. I have a several others that I've stopped powering up once they reach level 30 - this is mostly because IVs aren't super high, or max CP isn't high (exeggutors, arcanines, flareon, etc). I tend not to power up strictly offensive mons, but I'm much more of a prestige player than an enemy gym battler.

You bring up a good point. A key variable here is that not everyone plays to crush opponents as it may simply not be necessary where they live. Sometimes having niche prestigers is more important than maxed out anything.

Up

Yeah in my humble opinion, I think it's a better investment to place a mon into a friendly, high-level gym rather than a new gym (after knocking down an enemy gym). New gyms tend not to last long where I live.

Up

Down

So basically you wait for other friendly team members to knock down a gym, build it up to a high level gym and you swoop in to join? You know there's a word for that type of behavior in the animal kingdom?

Up

The f*ck you talking about? There are many sub-level-10 gyms around of all colors. I like to look for mid-high level friendly gyms and prestige them up. It helps protect me, along with everyone else in that gym, from being easily defeated. Prestiging a gym from level 9 to level 10 takes a lot of work, and I'm sure everyone else in the gym is happy that others (like me) provide a decent deterrent against their gym being knocked down.

What animal word were you thinking? Or were you joking?

Up

Down

Haha. You taking my words too serious. When I read your comment I imagined a vulture speaking the truth. Of course what you do is absolutely needed. It brings balance to the entire gym ecosystem. Someone has to do it. We all have done it. It wasn't meant to be insulting. Haha.

Didn't know Plato was a pogo player!

Crap maybe it was Aristotle?

Nah. It was Tesla.

I have a doduo....that count?

Well I find that when I am by myself and I take down an enemy gym, put in a good pokemon and train it up a little, then I mostly get people throwing in trash. What is the word for that?

I most of the time look for level 3-5 gyms with good high pokemon, build up to get in, then continue building up another couple levels so other players can jump in for free, and then they usually put in better pokemon because they see it might last longer. What is the word for that?

"Kind"? I guess that's not an animal kingdom word though...

That first scenario resembles a pack of hyenas taking your kill. Haha

The second one seems like your the male lion after the lioness makes the kill.

I've been watching the animal channel all day so excuse me if I see everything like animals.

I power up to the point of best usefulness. For example 3 Snorlaxes range 2844-2893.
I attack and defend Gyms. Sometimes use throw aways to prestige.
7 Gyms in town turn over every day. I attack in the AM, attack again if required later in the day. Keep at level 4 or below. Anybody leaves a low CP for bubblestrat, I knock it off.
My territory, I police it.

I'm powering to max (actually lev 35.5) only pkmn that:
1.I have a lot of candies available
+
2.I feel like they are very strong and useful
+
3.I feel like I won't easily find a better one (moveset and IV).

So...4 attacker:
Vaporeon 100% WG HP
Exeggutor 86,7% ZH SolBea
Alakazam 93% PC P
Venusaur 89% VW SolBea

And only Defender (which I rarely put on gym now, as he's my 7th or 9th best defender):
Exeggutor 84,4 % C P

Once again: no love for Gyarados, though I have 4 top iv (89 96 98 98) and moveset, and bunch of candies.

Up

Down

Why no love for Gyro if you don't mind?

Up

Down

Because it's horrible as a defender and subpar as an attacker (no stab on quick move). Vaporeon does much better imo, and has similar CP.

I have only powered up defenders...You don't need maxed out mons to take anything down honestly...Lvl 30 (anything) works perfectly fine for me and until I get to probably 1.2 million dust (own personal goal), I won't need to power up my Bite/Fire Fang Arcanine yet...since I have 4 other Arcanines which are level 26-30 already...as well as numerous usable Vaps, etc...

Still waiting to hatch a Snorlax or usable Dratini and finally get a Dragonite.

CP and powerups matter more to stay in a gym longer and that's about it for me as not everyone in my area tears down gyms completely.

Down

Having maxed out elite attackers is highly underrated on these boards. When you've got a 3500 CP Dragonite with DB/DC you can obliterate enemy gyms and the potion usage is minimal -- I power up to max 91% tier 1 or 1.5 attackers and defenders with "A" or "B" grades movesets.

Up

Down

Sadly, I don't have a Dragonite yet nor even a 90%+ Vap to power up so sitting on lots of dust...I don't disagree that you might as well power up attackers when you have tons of dust and good mons to use it on, but having maxed out elite attackers being highly underrated is an overstatement I think.

As powerful as a maxed out attacker is, the benefits are very very miniscule according to this video which isn't mine by the way (since someone thought I was pushing my own videos)...I think he posts here sometimes as FuNKyShO as well:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PDsZuUjEjk

It's not Dragonclaw since he probably doesn't have comparable mons to compare, but 1 second faster isn't huge and not saying I won't, but for people short on dust, they should probably wait till they have excess dust to do it and the benefits aren't as huge (unless someone can share a video that disbunks this one).

I have a maxed out CP3402 100%IV Dragonite with Dragon Breath/Dragon Claw and he could singlehandedly gone through 3-4 elite defenders. So easy that I rarely use him because lack of challenge. But if I am in a hurry and would like to quickly tear down the gym, he and his sibling (also 100%IV but with DB/DP, also maxed out) are my go to. Level 10 gym is not an issue for them.

There is definitely a benefit for having such a beast.

Up

Down

How do you have two 100% IV Dragonites? I've caught almost 1,400 dragon Pokémon and I haven't even found one yet ...

Up

I usually just power up as I need something bigger, and that is usually defenders. After level 30, there is enough time in between level ups that I can get enough dust to keep my most used defenders close to max.

I power up defenders when I want to place higher than pokemon already in a gym.

I power up attackers when I come up against a gym with several pokemon that are weak to one type. The ones I have been using most recently:
- I've been keeping a 96% Vaporeon with Hydro Pump maxed since before the CP update in order to fight the then abundant Arcanines, now using it to blast through Rhydons.
- I've been going a long time with an 89% Jolteon with Thunder at level 30, just over 2300 cp. Last night I was tearing down a lv10 gym with multiple 2900+ Gyarados and I decided to power up, hitting about level 35 and exactly 2500 cp. (ooh, nice. Stopped there even though at least one more power up available.)
- Exeggutor 96ZS just over 2600 cp.
- Lapras 51FB just over 2300 cp that I need to recheck a calculator to see if it would be worth powering up.
- Lapras 87IB over 2600 that I use for both defense and offense.

My other high attackers like Rhydon and Gyarados I have dropped into high gyms a while ago and they haven't returned yet.

Up

Down

Ok that’s weird. I literally caught a FB/B Lapras with 51% IV yesterday, around 1050 CP….

Up

Down

Tonight i will reach level 33. My Elite Pokémon (which i powered up) are these:

Defenders:
- Dragonite, SW/DC, 3171CP;
- Snorlax, ZH/BS, 3027CP;
- Gyarados, B/DP, 2954CP;
- Lapras, IS/Bliz, 2617CP;
- Snorlax, L/BS, 2211CP.

Attackers:
- Dragonite, DB/DP, 3219CP;
- Gyarados, B/HP, 2910CP;
- Vaporeon, WG/HP, 2825CP;
- Exeggutor, ZH/SoB, 2646CP;
- Alakazam, PC/P, 2489CP;
- Dragonite, DB/DC, 2488CP;
- Jolteon, TS/TB, 2459CP;
- Cloyster, FB/Bliz, 2160CP.

The only Pokemon of the list i will keep maxed are:

Defenders:
- Snorlax, ZH/BS road to level 40 (93.3% IVs);
- Gyarados road to 3000+;
- Snorlax L/BS road to 3000+ (82.2% IVs).

Attackers:
- Exeggutor, ZH/SoB road to level 40 (100% IVs);
- Alakazam, PC/P road to 2500+;
- Dragonite, DB/DC road to level 40 (93.3% IVs).

Besides this i will try to focus on hatching and keep my dust to gen 2. I have 308000 stardust right now. I have many high CP defenders who i just evolved or caught and never powered. Same for attackers.

Up

Down

I intend to power-up 6 ATK & 10 DEF > 82.2% Grade A Moveset. Currently have 3 Vaporeons (97.8% WG/AT, 97.8% WG/HP, 93.3% WG/AT) powered-up. I've wasted dust along the way and maybe doing so now but that's where I'm at.

Up

Down

Why spend lots of dust with 3 Vaporeons? my 93.3% one WG/HP seems to be more than enough (have a Gyarados B/HP level 33.5 too).
