Joseph Chan. Survivors include: son and daughter -inlaw, Kenneth C. and Ester Shepardson of Jackson; daughters and son-in-law, Dianna M. and Russell Hawkins of Mexia, Texas and Barbara A. Smith Beverly Jane Richardson Smith, 52, personnel officer for the Mississippi State Tax Commission, died Friday, January 4, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center following a long illness. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Smith was born September 4 4, 1949, at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Clinton and a drum majorette for the Clinton High School band.

Following graduation in 1967, she Smith majored in English at Mississippi College and taught briefly at Calloway High School before entering a career in personnel management. After working for Borg Warner Security in Houston, Texas for 12 years, she returned to Mississippi to serve as personnel officer for the State Tax Commission. Among her proudest accomplishments was being named the Commission's Employee of the Year 2001. Family and friends remember Mrs. Smith as a woman of wit and Intellect who worked diligently and selflessly while shunning the spotlight.

She gave generously of herself, working with a laptop computer on her bed up until December 23, to finish a policy manual for her employers. She then invested her remaining strength in preparing Christmas gifts for her loved ones. Her daughter, Robin Stumpf of Clinton, describes her as "Strong, heroic, and uncomplaining, an inspiration to everyone who witnessed her fight with cancer. She was not just my mother; she was my best friend, and I owe her everything." Her mother, Mrs. Jimmie Reynolds of Clinton recalls that Mrs.

Smith's character and determination were always a standout: "The boys at school voted Beverly the girl who ought to be on the football team. She was feminine and not very big, but she meant business." Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her father, Dr. L.B. Richardson.

Other survivors include her husband, Eddie Smith of Jackson, granddaughter, Ashlee Miley of Clinton, brothers Dr. Douglas Richardson of Jackson and Rev. Brian Richardson of Flowood. Mr. McLemore was born in Agricola, and lived in the Jackson and Madison area for 35 years. He was a former resident of Fairhope, where he owned Gordon's Inc. and he retired as a salesman with Cabell Electric in Jackson. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S.

Marines from 1948-1952, where he received the Bronze Star with a combat for valor. He was one of the Chosin Few for having fought in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean Conflict and also served as a Color Guard in Washington, DC. Mr. McLemore was a member of Highlands Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the American Legion nominee for the State of Mississippi to attend the Korean War Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C.

John Randolph Taylor, an architect of the reunification of northern and southern Presbyterian denominations in 1983, died Friday at his home at age 72. Taylor, who had been suffering from multiple myeloma and kidney failure, was a key leader on the committee working to reunify the branches into what is now the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Taylor also was elected moderator of the reunified denomination's General Assembly the same year as the merger. He spent the next year touring the country, working to strengthen ties in the new denomination. Taylor served as president of San Francisco Theological Seminary from 1985 until his retirement in 1994. Earlier, Taylor was a pastor of congregations in Washington, D.C., Charlotte and Atlanta and participated in the civil rights movement. While at Church of the Pilgrims in Washington, he urged church leaders to join the 1963 March on Washington and marched with Martin Luther King Jr.
