Am I ordering the correct Fuel Pump for my car?
Alternator and Generator Fuel Pumps look identical on the outside, but they mount differently under the base. Pay attention to where the metal operating lever is located underside.
- Does it stick out past the base?
- Or does it sit recessed inside the base?
It is essential to identify what style pump you have as the drive rod will either be too short (no contact with operating lever) or too long (break the operating lever on impact) if you order the incorrect unit. If you are unsure what style pump you have upon inspection of the operating lever, you can measure the overall length of your drive rod to help make a determination. Please double check with the image to ensure you are ordering the correct type of fuel pump.
Additional Notes:
Replacement mechanical pumps can put out 6 psi of fuel pressure or more out of the package. Stacking gaskets, or grinding orfiling down the flat side of the fuel pump drive rod are the standard methods for lowering the fuel pressure. We recommend 3 psi or lower for most carburetor set ups and some carburetors will work best with 1.5 psi.
Fuel Pumps come packed in a light oil that is used for testing and to keep the diaphragm from drying out. This is not atall out of the norm. As you should do before connecting any fuel pump to your carburetor, hook up the fuel lines to the pump. Run theline that goes to the carburetor into a small fuel safe container and crank the engine over until you get a clean, steady supply of fuel. Then connect the hose to the carburetor and continue on with the installation.
